My author spotlight today is L.J. Shen (Leigh), a USA Today, Washington Post and Amazon #1 Best-selling author of contemporary and Young Adult romance.
She’s one of my favorite “automatic one-click and read on release day” authors.
Not only do I love her books, but she’s one of the sweetest and most humble authors I follow.
She’s super supportive of bloggers and never fails to acknowledge and appreciate our efforts in promoting her books.
Leigh is amazing at writing a male’s POV and for creating bad boy, Hot Holes that torture her strong, feisty badass heroines until they realize that they’re crazy in love with them.
The humor that’s woven in her storytelling, the funny one-liners, and the main character’s internal thoughts somewhat soften the angst that has us turning the page as fast as we can.
I crave books that infuse clever witty banter with a unique story arc.
It’s ironic that Leigh’s genuinely sweet demeanor can create such jerky male characters.
At the beginning of the story, they have me whisper fussing at them.
I mostly want to strangle them (while also maybe sniffing their shirt), but by the end has me doodling their last name with my first in a loopy font.
I ALWAYS fall in love with them and get sad for the story to end.
Aside from being a best-selling author,Leigh likes spending time with her husband, young son, and friends.
She reads 3-5 books/week, always writes while listening to music, and does MMA for sport.
Some of the things she and I have in common are – we’re both fans of author Rainbow Rowell, like whiskey, I used to live in San Ramon CA which is minutes from her and we both are not a fan of the word “moist”.
Check out my Q & A with Leigh below and if you’ve missed my other author interviews, check them out here:
Q & A
1. Where is the strangest place you’ve ever gotten a great story idea?
✧ I tend to think about what I’m going to write when I jog at my local reservoir, so I always come up with ideas there. It’s very secluded and peaceful. Not necessarily strange, but a little different.
2. What is the last book you’ve loved?
✧ The Rules Do Not Apply, a memoir by Ariel Levy. You know a book is good when you find yourself bawling like a baby in the middle of the night.
3. What is your favorite TV or Netflix series?
✧ I think right now it’s a tie between Game of Thrones and The Assassination of Gianni Versace. As I wait for the next season of Stranger Things and Homeland.
4. Bucket list vacation spot?
✧ I’ve done my fair share of traveling, but I still need to visit Argentina and Japan.
5. Who is your favorite book boyfriend from another author?
✧ Jared Trent from Bully and Archer Hale from Archer’s Voice. I absolutely love them (in very different ways, of course).
6. What is your all-time favorite song?
✧ You can’t do this to me, LOL. It’s very hard to choose, and it changes constantly. Right now I’m hitting repeat on Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls just because it fits my WIP.
7. What’s your favorite gift ever received from a fan?
✧ It’s a toughie. Basically, anything book-related is close to my heart. Some people carved my covers from wood. One made a license plate with The HotHoles. I hung everything in my office. I love bracelets and necklaces that are handmade. I always wear them to signings.
8. Who is your unicorn author?
✧ There are way too many. I enjoy different authors from different genres. From contemporary romance, I really love Colleen Hoover, Vi Keeland, and Penny Reid. But I know a ton of others will pop into my mind the minute I hit send on this interview.
9. What is your favorite brand of mascara?
✧ Marc Jacobs. I swear by it. We’re talking the kind of loyalty I usually reserve for my spouse and close family.
10. What’s your favorite name out of all your characters?
✧ I love Edie’s name. And Emilia. And the new girl’s name, whom I’m writing for Bane’s story. You’ll find out soon enough 🙂
